It’s a trend occurring all around the country, a growing number of Australians are leaving capital and coastal cities in favour of regional areas, as people learn how great the lifestyle and opportunities are that await.  Against pre-2020 levels, migration from capital cities to regional areas is up 11.7%, as more people are giving up city living for the regional alternative. Read on below for the benefits of moving to the regions.

Escape the City: Affordable living awaits

A large factor driving this migration trend is the ever-rising cost of living. For many, regional Australia promises a much more affordable and sustainable way of life. An average Sydney renter can expect to see their rent fall from $180 per week by moving inland.

Buying a home is an ever-growing challenge in today’s market. Especially in capital cities, where average prices are exceeding record-breaking highs.  Regional Australia can be a very viable way to enter this tough housing market. CoreLogic’s Home Value Index data shows that regional areas are 15% more affordable than major cities.

At Boyce, we’ve seen many of our team members make the move to regional Australia—often driven by the desire for a more balanced lifestyle. What they’ve found is much more than just affordability; they’ve discovered a fulfilling way of life and a wealth of professional opportunities.

Where everybody knows your name

Unlike the fast-paced anonymity often found in our major cities, regional towns tend to foster stronger social bonds. Many are feeling much more connected and embedded to their community after moving away from our capitals.

Alicia Russ joined us at Boyce as a Graduate Accountant in Dubbo in 2019. She has gone on to become a Manager in our Boyce Agri Services team and loves the regional way of life.

“I love living in regional NSW because it fosters close-knit communities and deep friendships. Here everyone knows your name, and there’s a genuine sense of belonging. Whether it’s a friendly wave from a neighbour or a chat at the local store, you’re never alone. The warmth and camaraderie make it a truly special place to call home.”

Best of both worlds

Carolyn joined our Boyce Private Wealth team in late 2020 after leaving Melbourne. She’s now based in our Goulburn office, a city she believes is “the best of both worlds”.

“Moving to regional NSW allowed me to be strategically located with easy access to family in Sydney and Canberra – presenting a unique blend of urban accessibility and rural tranquillity.”

Big Impact, Small Town

Since leaving Melbourne, Carolyn has seen her role as a financial planner evolve in meaningful ways. Working in regional Australia, she’s noticed a distinct shift in the kind of impact professionals can have.

“Beyond the physical environment, the type of work available in regional NSW can be equally appealing. Professional, like those at Boyce, find that the work they undertake with clients is at a higher level compared to their urban counterparts. The diversity of clients, complex financial advising, and more challenging strategies contribute to a more rewarding professional experience.”

Fresh Air, Wide Open Spaces – Access to Nature

For many of us at Boyce, making the move to the regions has truly been a breath of fresh air. Trading in grey city gridlocks for green rolling hills and lush pastures has given us a renewed sense of calm. Fresh air really does create fresh perspectives. Nature’s backdrop makes every stroll scenic and every sunset something special.
