ATO App Strengthens Security with New Call Verification Feature 

What is the ATO app currently used for? 

The ATO app allows individuals and sole traders to manage tax and superannuation on the go. Features include myDeductions â€“ which records expenses, tax return tracking, viewing super balances, and accessing online services (myTax). Currently the app is secure and offers multiple safety features.  

Latest security features: 

The ATO’s most recent app-related article highlights how 7,500 ATO impersonation scams were reported in July 2025 alone. Nearly a year later, as of 31 March 2026, the ATO app now has the following security features: 

  • Real time messages – the ATO app notifies users (sends a push notification to users’ phones) in real time when important changes are made to their ATO account. 
  • Account lock – app users can lock their ATO account if concerned about unauthorised access. 
  • [New] ‘Verify call’ feature – clients can now use the ATO app to confirm incoming calls are not scams. 

How does the new ‘verify call’ security feature work? 

Clients are encouraged to download the ATO app and register their device. If a client receives a call from someone claiming to be an ATO representative they can now open the ATO app, login and choose the ‘verify call’ option. Within 30 seconds the user will receive a notification confirming the ATO call. If no notification is received, clients should treat the call as an attempted scam and hang up. 

This new feature serves as a timely reminder to remain vigilant against financial scams, and we expect it to positively support the financial well‑being of our clients.
