Sponsorship recipient announced

Carly Sims, a third year Business student at the University of New England in Armidale has been awarded a scholarship worth up to $4,000 and a guarantee of 12 months paid work experience with Boyce Chartered Accountants.

The Directors of Boyce offer the sponsorship annually to a final year student at UNE studying accounting, economics, financial administration or a related course.  The sponsorship was established by the firm in 2006 in memory of the late Tony Quirk, a graduate of UNE,  who joined the Boyce Moree office and went on to become the youngest ever director appointed in the firm.

Director, Phil Alchin explains that Boyce is committed to promoting opportunities in regional NSW for aspiring young accountants through the firm’s scholarship programs.

“Our aim is to foster the careers of young people from country areas who would like to remain in the bush,” said Mr Alchin.

“We want our bright young graduates to realise that you don’t need to move to the city and join one of the larger metropolitan firms in order to have an interesting, challenging and rewarding career.”

To qualify, students are required to submit an expression of interest. The sponsorship is awarded based on an assessment of each applicant’s academic achievements to date and an interview process.

This year's recipient Carly Sims is studying a Bachelor of Business majoring in accounting and human resource management at UNE. She hails from Tamworth and spent her final years of secondary schooling at Calrossy Anglican Girls School in Tamworth. Carly is pictured at right being congratulated by Phil Alchin.

Carly has already had some experience with Boyce having spent the July 2009 semester break in the Moree office and has now returned for a second stint during the Summer break. Carly relishes the chance to apply some of the theory from her course in a practical way to assist clients.

As well as receiving various awards from St Alberts College at UNE for academic excellence, Carly is a keen netball player and participates in a number of co-curricular activities.

Carly will commence full-time with Boyce Moree in July 2010 after completing her degree. She will join a number of past UNE graduates who have commenced their careers with the firm, just as Tony Quirk did back in 1991.
