Boyce to raise funds for the burns support foundation

2 July 2012

The Burns Support Foundation (BSF) is a non-profit organisation established in 1990 to provide support and assistance to burns survivors and their families. The Foundation doesn’t receive any government support and relies solely on fund-raising to operate.

This very worthy cause has been chosen by the Boyce team to be the recipient of funds raised through our participation in the annual City 2 Surf event.

BSF is managed by burn survivors, relatives of burns survivors and professional staff working for the NSW Severe Burn Injury Service who volunteer their time. Support services offered by BSF include a parent/carer support group, a young adults group, a telephone help line and referral service, a newsletter and family camps which are run biannually. BSF also provides some direct assistance to individual burns victims such as purchasing high quality wigs and providing financial assistance in circumstances of extreme hardship.

The Family Camp, named “Camp Corroboree” in reference to the Aboriginal word signifying a gathering of men, women and children to discuss new ideas, celebrate a re-birthing through initiation or a coming together to share a common grief, is the major initiative of BSF.

Camp Corroboree provides a safe environment in which families who have shared similar experiences and similar needs can meet. Camp participants are encouraged to take part in challenging activities that they would not normally have the opportunity to enjoy such as rock climbing, abseiling and canoeing. The camp is unique as it offers burns specific counselling expertise as part of the program.

The cost of holding the biannual camps is hefty and it is the aim of the Boyce team to raise enough funds to help BSF continue this wonderful initiative.

The City 2 Surf is a major event on the Boyce calendar. It’s a fun day with lots of healthy activity and time to relax after the hard slog. It’s also important to us as it enables our team, their families and friends and our clients to become involved either through helping out on the day (anyone who is good on the barbeque is very welcome!) or by donating to support our chosen charity.

This year, as the Burns Support Foundation is in dire need of funds to stay operational, the Boyce team is going all out to think creatively and laterally of ways to raise the maximum amount of dollars. One great idea to emerge already is publication of “Boyce Bites”, a cook-book of our favourite recipes which we hope will be a best-seller. No doubt the Boyce Directors’ calendar is next!

We’ll keep you informed of the fund-raising events being held by each Boyce office and we hope that you will join us in our quest to raise much needed funds for this very worthy cause.
